BARNABY, R.I.P.

Welcome to the Damson Herald, Christmas 2005.

Merry Christmas to all our readers!

Damson Rest. Hello again to you all from Kirstin, Matt, Andrew & Grant.

In Memoriam

It was Kirstin’s parents’ 60th wedding anniversary in August. A quite, private, event took place at her father’s hospital bedside. A few days later, in early September, Kirstin’s father died and was subsequently buried at a ‘Green’ burial site in the Galloway hills. A thoroughly decent and honourable man, he is missed by family and friends alike.

WILLIAM DRUMMOND, RIP

La La Land

Last Christmas we had a sing-along evening with each family member making a contribution. Here we see Kirstin in rehearsal with Grant who provided backing for everyone.

WALKING THE LINE

Whet your whistle

Christmas is a time for family and friends to meet-up. Luke Coast (with his parents) has been a regular visitor to Damson Rest. He is an occasional visitor also to Sweden – hence his enthusiasm for Spendrups (Swedish) beer.

GRANT & LUKE

New Dwelling

Kirstin and Matt spent New Year at the house of Kirstin’s parents had moved to during 2005. It is in a village in Dumfries and Galloway.

French Visitors

Kirstin and Matt have helped the Codsall and Bilbrook ‘Twining Association’ on several occasions by providing accommodation for visitors from France as part of the exchange arrangements. The couple who stayed at Damson Rest this year are seen in the photograph with Kirstin, at Arley by the river Severn.

Tufty

Another feature of the summer garden at Damson Rest is the occasional sighting of one of our cats. Seen here is Tufty, continuing a habit established by the late Barnaby, of catching a rabbit in the nearby field and returning home to eat it!

ALAN AND THE PELFORTH

It's a jungle out there

During the last wet and muddy visit to Dinan in October Kirstin could not resist this stuffed panther offered for a modest 19 Euros in the Champion supermarket! In this picture the ‘beast’ is sharing space in the caravan with the Brittany Ferries Teddy; a regular visitor.

France in the Spring

The caravan at Dinan was visited in the spring; the famous abbey atop Mt St-Michel can be seen in the photo; those of you with good eyesight (or the required amount of imagination) will be able to see Kirstin, Grant and Andrew walking towards the historical site.

MONT ST. MICHEL

Andrew and Grant were anxious to be seen to be taking the visit seriously. Seen here at the cloisters of the Abbey.

CLOISTERS

Taking things less seriously were Kirstin and Matt, pictured at their favourite watering hole at the Port of Dinan.

KIRSTIN & MATT

On the return crossing Andrew and Grant appeared to be in an even more serious mood; can’t the young loosen-up a little?

THE BOYS ON THE FERRY

Back in the UK

One of the most pleasure-efficient purchases in recent years has been the polyethylene gazebos, one of which is erected in the garden each summer. Many pleasant evenings are spent drinking wine, eating and chatting therein.

Summer in France

In July Kirstin and Matt took their main summer holiday in France. The Buccaneer caravan (based at Dinan in Brittany) was taken to Quimper for just over a week. The shop in the photograph is a renowned dealer in crockery based in the town; one cannot help wondering how long the plates fixed to the front of the shop would last without the attention of vandals, if such an arrangement were attempted in the UK.

SHOP IN QUIMPER

French tourist towns generally have their ‘little train’ that make regular tours of a town’s most interesting parts. The Quimper train is sponsored by the shop illustrated above; hence the ‘decorated porcelain’ paintwork.

LITTLE TRAIN OF QUIMPER

The Atlantic coast of west Brittany (Finisture ‘Department’ i.e. ‘end of land’, or as we might know it Land's end) is famous for its rugged outline and its lighthouses. The two lighthouses in this picture are at Pointe du Raz, due west of Quimper.

COASTAL AREA

Upon returning to Dinan Kirstin and Matt joined two other couples, Alan and Judy (of whom there has been mention in past editions of the Damson Herald) and Sue and June. Sue and June are seen in this photograph (yes, he IS a boy named Sue!), taken at the favoured tea rooms in Dinan.

SUE AND JUNE

Alan is captured in this picture, taken at Taden near Dinan, pouring an orange juice. This is a sight comparable with that of flying pigs. Be assured, the drink was not for Alan himself.
